The average person can gain up to five pounds while on vacation. It’s really easy to do. Between eating out at restaurants and less exercise due to relaxing you can see how it’s easy to pack on the pounds.
When I started my weight loss journey I knew that there would be times of gains for vacations and holidays. I fully expect it and I know that I can’t let one week off track set me up to never get back on track.
As we were planning our family beach vacation that we take every year, I took some time to reflect and I decided that I was not going to gain a single pound while we were gone. I decided that there has to be way to keep from gaining weight while at the beach.
I made a goal to lose two pounds while we were away for the week. I knew it might be a stretch but I was determined to give it a try. Before I left for vacation I sat down and made the goal for myself to lose two pounds and then I went a step further and told a friend my plan and made it a bet of sorts. So, I hopped on the scale and snapped a quick picture of my “before vacation” weight on the day that we were leaving. Side bar, this is the first time I’ve ever publicly posted my weight ya’ll! I can’t believe that I just did it!
After snapping the scale picture we headed out the door for our vacation! We had an amazing time! We drove 6 hours from home to the beach so of course that meant a stop at less than ideal places for lunches on the way down and the way back. But, I stuck to my plan even though I didn’t have much to choose from. I was so proud of myself for that! We stayed in a beach house with some family members and we ate out at restaurants quite a bit. We also took turns cooking and staying in a few nights of our trip.
So, I know you are asking how did I do? What was my secret? I decided that I was going to stick to a strict low carb diet while we were there. I didn’t eat a single drop of bread nor a grain of flour. I felt that it gave me the best options for not having to eat a salad at every single restaurant that we went too. And, we went to some great restaurants! I had steak, a bunless burger, pulled pork, and grilled chicken and skipped the high starch sides that came with them. For breakfast, I would go with bacon or ham and cheese roll ups, and for lunch I went with a high protein leftover from a meal along with some healthy veggies as a side. I ate quite a bit of raw broccoli and salad. i had to plan for quick and easy things that didn’t take much prep.
It certainly wasn’t easy especially with four kids in the house so there were all kinds of goodies. Most of them laying around in plain sight! I struggled with my resolve plenty of times, but I was determined to meet my goal! I didn’t really add in a lot of exercise but I made sure to get in my steps every day. There may or may not have been a night when my sister in law and mother in law found me pacing the living room trying to get in the rest of my steps for the day!
When we walked in the door from our drive home I rushed straight to the scale to check my progress! I was over the moon excited to find out that I not only met my goal but I beat it! And, I didn’t feel deprived, starved, or like I spent my entire vacation working out. I really do feel like how I lost 3 pounds on vacation is that I made a goal and a plan and I stuck to it! I think just having that goal and sharing it with my friend to helped to keep my accountable. I encourage you if you are on a weight loss journey to seek out someone that can you help with your goals! I’m always here to cheer you on if you need someone who understand!
